NKTR-063 (inhaled vancomycin)
Market information
NKTR-063 (inhaled vancomycin) is a next-generation antibiotic therapy being developed by Nektar for the treatment of patients at risk for moderate to severe Gram-positive pneumonias, including Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Overall, MRSA accounts for approximately 20% of all cases of nosocomial pneumonia. Among the causative pathogens of ventilator-associated pneumonia, Gram-positive strains are common and are associated with a high mortality.
NKTR-063 Product Profile
NKTR-063 represents the potential to treat Gram-positive pneumonias while limiting toxicities typical of systemic administration of Vancomycin and other glycopeptide antibiotics. The potential to lower the development of antibiotic resistance by delivering targeted high drug concentrations at the site of infection offers a unique pharmacokinetic profile demonstrating concentration dependent bacterialcidal activity.
Nektar completed a Phase 1 study on NKTR-063. The trial is an open-label, dose-escalation study to assess the pulmonary distribution, pharmacokinetics, and tolerability in healthy human volunteers.
