Cimzia® (peg-antiTNF alpha antibody fragment) is in development for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which there is chronic inflammation of the joints and often in the tissue around the joints. The inflammation may affect other organs in the body as well. Patients may experience long symptom-free periods, however since it is a progressive illness, rheumatoid arthritis has the potential to cause joint destruction and functional disability. Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines and to date, has no medical cure. The disease, once it starts tends to fluctuate between periods of inactivity (remission) and activity (relapse). UCB Pharma has partnered with Nektar to develop Cimzia™ using our patented Advanced PEGylation Technology. Current therapies treat the symptoms of the disease or modify the disease, or a combination of the two; and most require daily or weekly administration. Nektar Advanced PEGylation would help reduce the dosing frequency of the drug to once every four weeks, a significant patient benefit in terms of convenience and compliance.
