DEFINITY® (perflutren lipid microsphere injectable suspension), an ultrasound contrast agent, is designed to increase the diagnostic power of echocardiography, the most widely used cardiac imaging test, by enabling clearer visualization of the heart than echocardiography alone in patients with suboptimal echocardiograms. Nektar provided a uniquely designed PEG hydrogel to enable DEFINITY® using Advanced PEGylation Technology. The results of a multicenter Phase 2 study indicate that echocardiography used in conjunction with DEFINITY® is a viable and accurate non-invasive method of detecting abnormalities in heart perfusion – an important marker for coronary artery disease.
