History of Nektar

The company was founded as Inhale Therapeutic Systems, Inc. by John S. Patton in 1990 and changed its name to Nektar Therapeutics in 2003. Nektar is headquartered in San Carlos, California, with additional locations in Huntsville, Alabama,India, and Ireland. Our scientists developed the first pulmonary delivery system for macromolecule therapeutics, creating new opportunities to potentially offer patients a non-invasive alternative to injections. This innovative, breakthrough system is used in the company's flagship partnered product, Exubera® (insulin human [rDNA origin]) Inhalation Powder, which has been approved in the U.S., EU, Brazil and Mexico for the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients. Specializing in both formulation and device development, the company has a broad pulmonary technology portfolio that also includes delivery solutions to treat the local lung for infections as well as to deliver medicines for fast-onset treatment of pain.

The company is also a market leader in PEG-based drug delivery and development, and has enabled blockbuster drugs for its partners such as Roche's PEGASYS® and Amgen's Neulasta.

The company's partnered product pipeline consists of nine approved products. The company has partnered with the world's top biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies for both pulmonary and PEGylation products, including Amgen, Novartis, Solvay Pharmaceuticals, UCB Pharma, Bayer Healthcare and Roche. Nektar is also working on its own products leveraging the technologies it has developed over the past fifteen years.
