PEG-INTRON® (peginterferon alpha-2b) was the first once-weekly PEGylated interferon approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hepatitis C (HCV) in previously untreated patients with compensated liver disease who are at least 18 years of age.

Nektar provided Schering-Plough with our Advanced PEGylation Technology and the reagents for the development of PEG-INTRON.

Hepatitis C is a leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer and the number one reason for liver transplants in the United States. Currently, it is estimated there are about 270 to 300 million people worldwide who are infected with HCV, 2.7 to 4 million of those are in the United States. The United States CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) estimates that there are up to 230,000 new HCV infections in the U.S. every year and that HCV is responsible for 8,000 to 10,000 deaths annually.
