The Nektar Pulmonary Drug Delivery System (PDDS) is a proprietary platform for the high-efficiency delivery of aerosolized drugs to patients, particularly those requiring positive-pressure breathing assistance, including mechanical ventilation. The Nektar PDDS is designed to provide exceptionally high deposition of drug directly to the lung, providing a several fold increase in the delivered lung dose as compared to current methods of aerosolized medication delivery1. Unlike nebulizers and inhalers, the Nektar PDDS is designed to deliver reproducible and consistent doses across a wide range of ventilator settings for any patient population, including neonates. The Nektar PDDS includes a software driven controller capable of sensing ventilator performance parameters and aerosolizing drug during a predetermined portion of the ventilator cycle. An Aerosol Generator with a pre-set particle size is used to customize the particle size for each individual therapeutic application and the selected drug. The aerosol generator can be placed in-line in an optimal position with the ventilator circuit, and is powered by the controller to produce aerosol only during the appropriate portion of the patient’s inspiration.
