Somavert® (pegvisomant) is the first in a new class of medicines called growth hormone receptor antagonists and is used to treat acromegaly. Acromegaly is a debilitating disease caused by a non-cancerous tumor on the pituitary gland that produces increased quantities of IGF-1 growth hormone, potentially leading to continued growth of hands and feet, changes in face shape, swelling, headaches, hypertension, diabetes, and other related symptoms. Nektar's Advanced PEGylation Technology was used to develop Somavert. Somavert® is designed to block the binding of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland, slowing or preventing the progression of acromegaly by normalizing IGF-1 levels. This normalization may help patients lessen some of their symptoms including soft tissue swelling, joint pain, headaches, sweating, and fatigue, and as a result, enhance their quality of life.
